Scarecrow's Maize

The Story Behind Scarecrow's Maize

When Mr. Star moved west in a search for gold, he quickly discovered that the people getting rich were the ones who sold goods and services to the miners, not the miners themselves. So he went back to what he knew best, farming. Settling outside the town of Deadlands, he began planting corn as an easy crop to start with. As most farmers did, he decided to make a couple Scarecrows for the field to keep birds away. He snuck into town and “borrowed” some old clothes from the undertaker. They came from some recently deceased townsfolk who seemed to have come down with an unknown illness, causing them to become violent and manic, attacking others relentlessly. The Scarecrows were created from these rotting old clothes, and stuffed with bits of old blankets, straw and garbage.

When harvest time approached, Mr. Star was just about to start work for the day when an intense storm rolled in, the sky grew dark, and the thunder and lightning started. He decided to harvest another day and began to head in. He noticed one of the scarecrows must have fallen down from the wind; it was not where he thought it should be. Then between the thunder claps he thought he heard a guttural growling on his right side, looking he saw nothing, then it came from the other side. The last thing he saw, as his disconnected head fell to the ground, was a misshapen Scarecrow, swinging a rusty sickle.
